The FIREup project is designed to meet the challenges facing the UK designer fashion sector, by facilitating new links between Fashion, Innovation, Research and Enterprise across the UK. 

The UK Fashion industry is a vital part of the UK economy, contributing nearly £37bn annually. It has a world-class reputation for the creativity of its designers, diversity of its retail offer and strength of its education and research institutions

However, creative ideas alone are not enough - there are key challenges facing the UK Designer Fashion Industry that can limit innovation, as identified by The British Fashion Council in its recent report “The Value of the UK Fashion Industry”. These include missing links between design, and science and technology disciplines, resulting in an emerging skills and knowledge gap;  and insufficient support for designers wanting to build sustainable business models that also address environmental concerns.
